Four very talented artists will be showing wildlife themed artwork. These artists are: Calvin Carter, Albert Faggard, Jo Fowler and Tommy Humphrey.

Calvin Carter and Albert Faggard have recently had exhibits at the Museum of Southeast Texas. Tommy Humphrey is a highly regarded wildlife artist who has had work accepted in the Federal Duck Stamp Competition. Jo Fowler is a well-known artist and outstanding art instructor in the region.

Plus, Jo Fowler is adding something special to this event. In conjunction with the Onderdonk exhibit at the Stark Museum of Art in Orange Texas, she has organized "In the Shadow of Julian Onderdonk". For this exhibit, Fowler challenged her adult students to study the works of Master Landscape Artist Julian Onderdonk and as part of their classroom study, reproduce his paintings. Onderdonk was an American Impressionist who is often referred to as the Father of Texas Painting. These adult students researched his work and visited the Onderdonk exhibit currently at the Stark Museum. This is not an ordinary student exhibit, these “students” are accomplished painters - and Jo Fowler is an excellent teacher.

Be sure to stop by and see the May exhibit at the Arts Center! The opening reception will be Saturday August 2nd from 2 - 4pm. ETAC News asked the artists to talk about their backgrounds and their art. Here are their responses.

Please tell us a little about yourselves:
Jeanette: I was born in Houston, Texas. I lived and attended school in Highlands and Pasadena, Texas. After finishing school I married and raised three wonderful children. After raising my family I decided it was time to devote myself to art again.
Tina: I was born and raised in Houston, Texas and attended school in the Sheldon School District. I later attended the University of Houston at night while working. I have three great kids. I moved here in 1992 after visiting family in the area for several years.

When did each of you begin painting and what influenced you to start making art?
Jeanette: As I child I became very ill at an early age. I wasn’t able to run and play with the other children so I began drawing and was soon consumed with the desire to create. I always wanted to be a dress designer. I loved making clothes for my paper dolls. I also made patterns for my own clothes and then mother would sew them. I later became a very skilled seamstress.
Tina: I began as early as I could hold a crayon I suppose. My mother began teaching me about perspective and lessons on portraiture at a fairly young age. I just felt really lucky. She was always painting, drawing or making things. The house was decorated with her oil paintings, old furniture she re-upholstered to look like new, hand made Christmas ornaments. It was a very creative environment to grow up in. Later I met my junior high school art teacher, Judith Haney. I loved going to her class. It was then that I began to find my own identity. I began to see myself as an artist. I never forgot her and recently we became reacquainted. Now as a grown women and fellow artists, we have become great friends.

How have you influence or helped one another as mother/daughter artists?
Jeanette: While raising my children I was always creating, but when my husband and I divorced I found myself in a world I knew nothing about. For several years my art was lost to me. When I wanted to get back to it I had lost all confidence and it was my daughter who pushed me and gave me the courage to try. She inspires me in so many ways. Not only is she my daughter, but my best friend as well.
Tina: I certainly recognize that in my case it was an inherited talent which goes back generations. I always saw my mother as being one of the most talented people I knew even when she didn’t see it herself. Her grandfather who was born and raised in Czechoslovakia was an artist who painted murals and backdrops
for local plays. Her brothers both exhibited talent, one as a cartoonist and the other with more technical drawing skills. I feel creativity is a gift and shouldn’t be taken for granted.

What is your favorite medium and why?
Jeanette: It used to be drawing, then I thought it was pastel, but I really think it is oils. I love the way the paint flows with the stroke of the brush and the brilliant colors. With oils you can make the colors as vivid as you want or dull them down as you need to.
Tina: I don’t have a favorite medium at this point, but I’m currently working a lot in oils and I’m really enjoying it.

Is there any special way you choose the subject or themes of your work?
Jeanette: Life can be so chaotic. In my paintings, I like to evoke a sense of peace and calm as well as beauty. Even in a storm, as in some recent paintings, there is simplicity and a feeling that someone is in control and that makes me feel good.
Tina: Well, I work in the studio from my own photographs for the most part, but it really depends on what I’m inspired by at the time. I love doing figurative work, paintings that tell stories, some expressionistic and architectural. I shot a lot of film on a road trip a few years ago and the pieces for this exhibit were inspired not only for my love of architecture but also line, pattern and form.

What advise would you like to give to a beginning artist?
Jeanette: Be confident because that is what my instructor told me. Believe in yourself.
Tina: First of all, just go for it. What do you have to lose by trying? If you don’t try you have already lost, because you’ll never know what you could have done.

July meeting and other dates

Don't forget to attend the next East Texas Art League meeting at the Arts Center - Monday, July 14th at 6pm (the meeting was delayed one week because of the 4th of July holiday weekend.) She is a charter member of the Tyler County Art League (TCAL) and a former member of the Beaumont Art League. In addition to participating in many local and regional exhibitions, Ms. Reid has, been a long time participant in the Glenwood

Springs Art Guild Exhibition held each September

in Glenwood Springs, Colorado. ETAC News recently talked with June Reid about her art. Here is what she had to say:

How long have you been involved in art and how did you get started painting?

I first began painting in the 1970’s when I lived in Houston and took a class in oil painting. I began painting in watercolor when I started working with Lois Sturrock and the Lake Artists after we moved to the East Texas area in 1980. The Lake Artists is a group of artists who meet once a week to paint and study together. Some members have come and gone but we still meet every week at my gallery.

What is your favorite medium and why?

I really like watercolor. Even though I started painting in oils, I always wanted to paint in watercolor and once I started, I didn’t want to quit - I prefer it to oil. I also like to work in colored pencils or a combination of media. I especially enjoy doing small quick studies.

Is there any special way you choose your subject matter?

I enjoy painting natural things like flowers and landscapes. I don’t really have a particular criteria for choosing a subject, when I see something that appeals to me, I paint it.

What are some of the things that influence your art?

I have always had a creative streak and enjoy all types of creative work from crafts to fine art. I think I’ve tried nearly everything from ceramics to embroidery – but I settled on painting. I simply enjoy creating. I have a lot of books I use as study material, and get inspiration from them.

Do you have a favorite instructor or artist you look to for inspiration?

I particularly like the work of watercolorist Jan Kuntz and the way she paints flowers. I don’t have a formal degree in art, but I’ve attended lots of workshops – some as far away as Hawaii - I’ve studied with several different instructors such as local artist Reese Kennedy in Nacogdoches and nationally known artists Zoltan Szabo and Ann Templeton.

What advice would you like to give someone just beginning to paint or draw?

Have confidence. People start out drawing or painting and think “oh I can’t do this,” but you can if you stick with it. You will improve if you have the desire and the determination to keep with it. Don’t give up.

Everyone is invited to the opening reception of “June in June” Saturday, June 7th form 2-4pm and the exhibit will continue at the Arts Center through July 1st. You can see more of June Reid’s work at the June Reid Fine Art Gallery, 4525 North Hwy 69. in Colmesneil, Texas.

May Events at the Arts Center

The next meeting of the East Texas Art League will be Monday, May 5th, at 6pm. at the Arts Center. Beginning with the opening reception on April 5th, the Arts Center will present evidence of their latest journey: “Artistic Journey”. This exhibit of Bill’s watercolors and Carole’s art quilts promises to be a very special event.

Recently I asked Bill and Carole about their lives together and the influences on their respective art forms.
Please tell us a little about your backgrounds:

Bill grew up in Central Texas met Carole, a native of Virginia when the Army stationed him in Washington DC. They married in 1958 and moved to Austin Texas where Bill attended the University of Texas, graduating in 1971 with a BFA. After graduation Bill went to work as an illustrator for a Texas state agency. After retirement, Bill focused on developing his own style in watercolor and had shows in galleries in and around Austin.

During their early years together, Carole was busy with working and also being a full time mom. When their children had grown and retirement arrived for her, she turned her attention to making quilts. In 2003 the Wises moved to Jasper to escape city life and in 2005 they opened the Wise Art Gallery to showcase their work. They found that watercolor paintings and handmade art quilts complimented one another. They have since closed the gallery and now work from their home doing commission work.

What are some of the influences on your respective work?

Bill admires the watercolor style and work of Australian native Robert Wade and also British watercolorist, Ron Ranson.

Carole has had extensive experience in sewing and handwork and remembers being inspired by her grandmother’s quilting and sewing abilities. For 13 years, Carole ran a preschool with a creativity-oriented curriculum. Both she and Bill worked with the children and it was here she developed her love of color and how colors interplay with one another. Carole only began making quilts six years ago when she started making personally designed quilts for her family. Non-traditional quilts have always intrigued Carole and she works as a colorist enjoying the effect colors have on one another in her designs.

What do you find most appealing about your chosen medium?

Bill came to paint in watercolor as much by necessity as desire. He is allergic to some of the chemicals found in oil and acrylic media. Although TJ Arts Home School is a private business that rents classroom space from the Art Center, the Home School Program sometimes coordinates projects and activities with the League and the Center. These activities help support the operation of the Arts Center and increase visitor traffic. TJ Arts Home School has a student exhibition at the Center every year. If you have attended, you have seen how successful Jean and Tommy are in guiding these talented students. I interviewed Jean and Tommy about how they came to teach this program.

ETAL members are familiar with your work and know you are both accomplished artists and educators, would you please give us a little information on your respective artistic backgrounds? We both have been artistically inclined all our lives. Tommy has a BS in graphic design and an MEd and has taught art at the high school level for 33 years. Jean has college hours but has developed her skills through many workshops and a burning passion for art. She taught at a private school in the Dallas area for several years.

What first gave you the idea to start a home school arts program? It was Jean's idea. She enjoys working with young people and knew there was a need in this area.

Can you tell us about the home school arts program itself? We teach ages 5-17. Tommy is responsible for the curriculum, attendance records, and finances. Jean is responsible for everything else. Our curriculum is based on the public school requirements of the Texas State Board of Education. We do not teach any art history because we feel parents and the Home School Association can handle that area. What is more difficult for parents to handle is the teaching of hands on artistic skills. Jean teaches the 5-12 age group the Elements of Design and Principles of Arrangement. Tommy teaches the 13-17 ages. We really emphasize the elements and principles of art in all projects. For instance, we teach colors schemes by requiring the students to develop paintings based on each of the 5 color schemes. Students create color wheels and value scales and must employ this knowledge when they choose colors that match a certain color scheme and are required to only use those few colors. Students learn the language of art by doing the same subject using different color schemes. An entirely different feeling is achieved in each painting. Since we feel strongly about teaching a fine arts based curriculum, what we do not have is a project oriented curriculum or crafts course.

Students learn drawing and arrangement skills. Some projects are based on nothing but the Principles of Arrangement. (Abstract design) We do give them experience with the 3rd dimension by allowing them to work in ceramic clay. Fortunately clay is cheap and very forgiving.

How many students do you currently have? We currently have 36 students total enrolled - 16 in the morning session and 20 in the afternoon.

What is the most rewarding thing about teaching your students? No matter what you teach it is always the same "seeing that light turn on".

Jean and Tommy’s website is:

http://www.humphreycrow-art.com/

2008 Exhibit Schedule at the East Texas Regional Arts Center and Call to Artists

March 2008 - Spring: Sign of Faith

Opening reception will be Saturday, March 8th from 2-4 pm at the Arts Center. Here are her responses:

You mentioned in your artist’s talk at the opening of your show that because of your husband's being in the military, you have traveled quite a bit. Where are some of the places you have lived? Did travel influence your art? If so, how? Who were some of the artists or teachers who most influenced your work?

My husband's military duty stations were all in the states except for our tour in Panama. I studied with several professional artists in New Jersey, Michigan, and while visiting in Louisiana.

We've traveled from one side of the country to the other and from the North to the South. I always carry my camera for reference work. There are so many wonderful places to see. I lived up in the UP of Michigan at an Air Force base while my husband was in Vietnam and John Heath was the first professional artist I studied under. I learned a lot of techniques in landscapes with him.

Right there in Jasper I studied with Ronnie Wells doing watercolors. He really instilled in me the desire to paint in watercolor. I've also studied with Dalhart Windberg, which was a really wonderful experience. I attended a weeklong workshop with Jack Hines, a western painter and his wife Jessica Zemnisky, who paints children in pastel.

What brought you to Jasper?

As mentioned above, I came to Jasper years ago to study with Ronnie Wells but it's just been the last few years that I have exhibited my work here. A friend of mine, another artist named Misty Martin, encouraged me to come and show Roy James my portfolio. I started out in the little gallery around the corner and started coming to the Art League meetings once a month.

When did you first become interested in art?

I started drawing as a very young child on any piece of paper I could find and I remember smelling the oil paint my godmother used to paint on glasses, which led me to start painting with a friend when I was in the 7th grade.

What is your favorite art medium?

I really like all mediums and it just depends on the subject I'm going to paint and the mood I'm in. I enjoy doing detailed pencil drawings and pen and ink as well. Lately I've been doing a lot of watercolors.

Considering your own experience, what advice would you like to give to a young or beginning artist?

My advice to a young or beginning artist is if the desire is there go for it, try different mediums and different types of subject matter until you find what you like best, and practice and don't get discouraged. Enjoy it most of all.

Coming in 2008....

The East Texas Art League is pleased to host a workshop by internationally known pastel artist Susan Ogilvie.
